Canon Point: Post-Planet of the Dead, Pre-Waters of Mars. Flexible for PSLs.
Age: Probably around 1100, though he claims to be 905.
Gender: Male
Orientation: Panromantic, gray-A sexuality (axsexual-ish)
Although he has a scientific mind, the tenth Doctor is ruled by his emotions and is full of passion. He defines himself by the suffering he’s endured and by the guilt he carries with him over what he had to do to end the Time War. What keeps him going is the endless fascination and joy he finds in exploring the universe.
Dangerous or unusual situations don’t tend to rattle him, and he can retain an upbeat, even flippant attitude in the face of life-threatening peril. He’s lived a long, long time and has been traveling and getting tangled up in other people’s problems for most of it. Even when he runs into something he hasn’t before, there will always be a part of him that enjoys the thrill of discovery and adventure. He’s a renegade and an adrenaline junkie, hungry for new experiences and new knowledge. He comes alive under pressure and once even admits that the more dangerous things get, the more he loves it.
He believes in the best of people and in finding a peaceful solution wherever possible. His optimism isn’t blind, but he will avoid violence even to the point of offering old enemies a chance for forgiveness. In cases where an enemy has proven themselves beyond redemption, however, he can exhibit a fearsome rage and a lack of mercy: the way he dealt with the intergalactic group of hunters the Family of Blood, trapping them in existences of perpetual imprisonment, showed him at his most ruthless.
He can be arrogant, at times. He is well aware of how smart he is and has been known to announce “I’m brilliant!” out loud. Of course, this is often before he pulls some kind of genius trick, so his opinion of himself isn’t entirely unearned. He is also just starting to gain a reputation as the Last of the Time Lords, and he occasionally tries to use this as an intimidation tactic.
Although he is a romantic, he tends to keep people at an arm’s length. Love, especially, is a tricky emotion for him. The Doctor was in love with Rose Tyler, one of his companions, but had issues with saying it out loud - the only time he even came close to saying it was when he believed he’d never see her again and wouldn’t have another chance. This, too, ties back to his survivor’s guilt from the Time War. He’s the Last of the Time Lords, and a part of him strongly believes he’s meant to be alone: that his life isn’t meant for the kinds of things people share when they’re in love. Especially when one of them is bound to watch the other grow old and die perhaps hundreds of years before they will.
At the canon point I’m taking him from, the Doctor is travelling alone, solitary but upbeat. He’s given up on taking people with him because he only seems to wind up hurting them, and is doing his best to be happy on his own. Given the perpetual wonderment he experiences and the people he encounters in his travels (apart from all the dangerous bits), it isn’t too difficult. He’s convinced himself he’s better off on his own... for now.
